Eye to Fishy Eye

April 16, 2012

Here’s a pair of terracotta fish entwining themselves  on the entrance to a building  at the junction of Union Street and  New Street Station in Birmingham.  The building is now a branch of Santander but the style isn’t typical of bank architecture.

It’s good to see some terracotta at eye level as usually it’s at first storey level or even higher.  Birmingham has a wealth of terracotta on its Victorian buildings, to the extent that a letter was written to the Daily Mail (where else?) in 1908 complaining about the profusion of ‘cheap surface ornamentation.’
